Technology Developer Engineer
Would you like to use your skills to accelerate the global transition to a low-carbon circular economy?
About Cambi
Cambi is a world-leading provider of sustainable technology solutions that enable cities to turn wastewater sludge into valuable resources. We are a medium-size, Norway-based multinational company listed in Oslo on Euronext Growth, with offices in several countries. We have diligent employees from different backgrounds and more than 25 nationalities, and a growing sales network covering all continents.
Our core expertise lies in designing, testing, manufacturing, installing, and operating industrial process installations, used mainly for treating sewage sludge before or after anaerobic digestion in wastewater treatment plants. The technology, known as thermal hydrolysis, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and produces renewable energy, soil amendment and fertilizers products while destroying pathogens and other harmful substances. Our systems have the capacity to cater to over 120 million individuals across more than 28 countries. We are proud of having cities like Oslo, London, Washington, Singapore, and Beijing among our clients.
About the Role
We are seeking a curious and analytical engineer who wants to work with complex industrial processes and gradually take part in developing and improving them. In this role, you will contribute to the design and development of process solutions for operating plants. Over time, you will be exposed to how complex systems are understood, modelled, and improved in practice. This is not a role where all problems are clearly defined from the start. Much of the work involves identifying and analyzing the problem in order to understand what needs to be solved before solving it.
This is a role that requires time to grow into and where you will be working in an innovative and multidisciplinary environment. Developing the ability to fully understand and design complex process systems typically takes several years. You are not expected to have all the answers. What matters is how you approach problems and how you learn from them. The position is based at our head office in Norway.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting development of concepts to improve capacity and energy efficiency.
Working with operating plant data, including cleaning, analysing, and interpreting large time-series datasets from historians and other operational data systems.
Building and improving calculation tools and models.
Breaking down systems into unit operations to understand their behaviour and limitations.
Comparing theoretical models with real plant performance.
Contributing to technical discussions, troubleshooting activities, and design reviews.
Over time, you may take on increasing responsibility in shaping and defining process solutions.
Required Professional and Personal Qualifications
We are not primarily looking for someone who already knows how to design complete systems.
We are looking for someone who is motivated to understand how physical systems behave, who finds it motivating to bore into and challenge a problem.
We are looking for someone who understands that problem-solving can take time, has a strong work ethic, and does not give up easily.
You value efficiency and are motivated by developing attractive solutions. At the same time, you have strong execution skills and can drive processes forward from idea to implementation. In our experience, the engineers who succeed in this role are those who
Are curious about why things work, not just how.
Are comfortable working on problems that are not fully defined.
Are willing to say “I don’t fully understand this yet”.
Take time to investigate uncertainties instead of moving on quickly.
Are able to work across disciplines.
Are team oriented.
Are open to having your own assumptions discussed and challenged.
Do not assume that one solution is correct just because it appears consistent. Be open to access and re-access problems to improve and identify the most beneficial solutions together with colleagues.
A solid foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer or similar fields is important.
Experience from industry can be valuable but is not required.
Candidates with a Master’s degree or PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, process technology, applied physics, or similar relevant field are encouraged to apply.
Strong programming experience with solid proficiency in Python, including scripting, data analysis, numerical calculations, and handling large datasets.
Can demonstrate skills through publications, projects, or proven problem-solving experience.
Experience with process modelling, simulation, or engineering calculation tools is considered an advantage, for example Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, UniSim Design, Modelica, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, OpenFOAM, or similar.
At Cambi, we value people who share our commitment to the environment and the positive impact of the circular economy. Your personality should align with Cambi’s core philosophy, which centers around strong customer focus, delivering a high standard of quality in our solutions, products, and services, and always acting with integrity. Our work is driven by four core values: reliability, quality, teamwork, and curiosity. We’re looking for someone who not only shares these values but actively brings them to life.
